This single molecule, which is not naturally occurring, is effective in combating infections caused by influenza A and B. It can be used upon appearance of symptoms to significantly decrease the duration and severity of disease without adverse effects.
Minimal laboratory work has been done since efforts have instead been focused on clinical evaluation. Mechanism-of-action studies can be conducted in cell culture, and an avian flu lab animal model could be used for in vivo analysis.
Several hundred patients have been successfully treated with this product by affiliated physicians, and experienced rapid (less than 60 minutes) response to therapy.
The avian flu model should be used to determine if it is appropriate for this therapeutic agent. If successful, then a pharma-type package could rapidly be prepared. This is extremely important since there are no effective therapies for treating true influenza and the predications are many that the next influenza pandemic will occur soon, and will likely be a killer. While other companies concentrate on vaccines that will be outdated with each new flu strain, BTL’s products will treat all flu strains and can be used even when vaccines are not available.
