Product Candidate Description
Our product is a naturally-occurring molecule that is patented both here and abroad. It has been successfully evaluated in controlled studies for several human and canine indications, and has been used to treat such disorders as chronic bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), cystic fibrosis, asthma sinusitis, and otitis media.
Laboratory Status
This agent has been shown to stimulate P2Y receptors on the cells lining the respiratory tract and ear canals. This stimulation causes the cilia to beat faster and stronger to move fluid and debris out of the lungs or ear canals. There also appears to be a shift in the ratio of solid to liquid in sputum in favor of the latter, resulting in easier expectoration. Furthermore, samples taken from patients treated with this product show an inhibition of pro-inflammatory cytokines and a corresponding stimulation of those cytokines with anti-inflammatory activity.
Clinical Status
Three FDA Phase 2 trials have been completed to evaluate this product in a controlled fashion for the treatment of cystic fibrosis, chronic bronchitis, and COPD. Also, a blinded trial was conducted with puppies suffering from naturally-occurring kennel cough. Physicians have also used this product to treat a variety of respiratory disorders affecting patients in their practice.
Path Forward
Various delivery systems for this product candidate are being evaluated. Mechanism of action studies need to be continued and expanded to better understand all that is occurring as a consequence of utilizing this product candidate for the aforementioned as well as additional indications.
